Help? How can I fund myself for a sabbatical in an R01?

I'm welcome in a lab in Hub's institution- hallelujah, we can live together and I can get great training, too! But there's no money from the institution. Can anyone tell me about funding sources to come from a PUI to an R01? What is this F33? If you need more details about my subfield, please e-mail.
Note bene: My institution, like many, will pay my full salary for a semester or half my salary for a full year. I'm going for a year. Full stop. I'd like to have additional salary and supplies, if possible.

  1. Ooh, exciting news! I don't have any knowledge about funding, but this sounds like a great opportunity if you can make it work.

  2. This may not be applicable in your situation, but if there's any NSF funding in the lab, NSF is really good about proving supplements to existing grants to support collaboration between researchers from PUIs and R1s. These are supplements (Research Opportunity Awards, I think they're called) at the program officer's discretion, so you don't have to go through the usual application process.

  3. That is one of the things you can use an RUI for. http://www.nsf.gov/funding/pgm_summ.jsp?pims_id=5518

I have been told that they are not nearly as hard to get as other NSF funding, plus they have open applications and no deadlines.

  4. ROA mentioned above is the best that I can think of. The PI of the lab you are going to work in must have an active NSF grant, the application is shorter (I believe) and must be requested from the PI's institution, but usually is mostly written by the PUI prof. My understanding is that a ROA is a supplementary grant and therefore does not go through the same review process as the full grants and is at the discretion of the program officer. Good Luck!
