I am a professor at a primarily undergraduate institution. My spouse is a research professor and works two hours' drive away. This blog is primarily about life at a PUI, but also about our family trying to make the most of an uncomfortable lifestyle.

getting cold feet
For the last couple of months, I have noticed my readership go up and my comments go precipitously down ("crunchy moms" post excepted). The blog was originally meant to be a forum, but hasn't been much of one lately. Is there something wrong with my commenting settings, perhaps? Hub is very nervous about privacy issues, especially when I express strong opinions about people or organizations. Any input?

That happened to me a while ago, also. I think it's because a lot of people (me included) read on RSS and don't want to make that extra step to comment.
ReplyDeleteSorry. I for one could stop being a lurker. Since I'm not an academic, I usually don't have much to say other than really topical things.
ReplyDelete1. You have a really good blog list so I come to your site often even when you haven't posted
ReplyDelete2. I am too lazy/busy to post comments (sorry!)
i ditto what anon above says. I often come for your blog list though you dn't update that much.
ReplyDeletei love your posts, but am a terminal lurker.
I'm not reading blogs as much as I used to. I tend to scan titles and first lines to decide if I'm interested enough to read whole posts. I usually decide based entirely on topics, so if your title doesn't catch my attention, I won't read.
ReplyDeleteI don't know if that helps, I may not be very representative in my browsing habits.
I've also heard that blogging is going out of style. =p
I don't think you are particularly opinionated on your blog, so I wouldn't worry about that too much. I don't think I've read anything of yours that I would consider potentially harmful even if you were discovered IRL. I am sure people enjoy reading, but often the topic doesn't lend itself to commenting, such as the more personal posts. I am also trying to establish a correlation between topic and number of comments on my blog, and unless the topic is really flammable, it's kind of hit or miss.
ReplyDeleteAlso, you moderate comments, maybe that has an effect. Perhaps some people don't like feeling that they are being censored.
I also generally read while in Google Reader, so I don't come to comment much (I didn't comment much before either, though, so I'm not the one who stopped commenting.).
